Site Actions Gear

After you have logged into your site, you will see a blue and a pale green bar added to the top of the page. These bars are referred to as "the Ribbon".

The SharePoint ribbon with a username displayed in the top right corner.

The Ribbon holds all of the controls and items you will need to make updates to your website.

The blue bar will show information such as

  • Your username in the top right corner after your login
  • If a page that you are viewing has been checked out to you or another editor
  • The Site Actions gear button , which is used for a large variety of editing tasks

You will use the Site Actions gear frequently when making updates to your site.
Let's review the actions available.

This will show or hide the tabs in the green bar of the Ribbon. When the Ribbon is shown, you will see the Browse, Page, and Publish tabs. These tabs are critical to the editing process, so the Ribbon should remain shown.
